Overview
North and South Haiwee Reservoirs are the southernmost Los Angeles Aqueduct (LAA) reservoirs in Inyo County separated by Merritt Dam. Haiwee Reservoirs are approximately 5 miles south of the intersection of US395 Highway and SR-190 and just east of US-395 Highway. The construction of North Haiwee Dam was first completed in February 1913.
Project Description
The purpose of the Project is to contain the water in North Haiwee Reservoir in the event the existing North Haiwee Dam fails due to a seismic event.
A new earthfill embankment dam will be constructed north of the North Haiwee Dam to enhance seismic reliability. The project will realign Cactus Flats Road and part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct channel, and will include the following phases:
- Phase I – Cactus Flats Road Realignment and US 395 Hwy Improvements (Completed)
- Approximately 4,400 feet of Cactus flats Road were realigned.
- Constructed a left-hand turn lane on US 395. - Phase II – Realignment of a portion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct (Completed)
- Approximately 1,950 feet of the existing Los Angeles Aqueduct was realigned to match existing LAA channel dimensions. - Phase III - North Haiwee Dam No. 2 Construction (In Progress)
- An earth filled dam located 800 feet north of the existing dam approximately 1,970 feet long, 42 feet high, and 30 feet wide.
