Facility Tours

LADWP sponsors student tours to various local water and power facilities.

New tours to begin January 2025

Most tours will be to the historic Power Plant 1, a hydroelectric plant that went into service in 1917 and continues to operate today.

Facility Tour Guidelines

  • Minimum group size: 15
  • Maximum group size: 60 including chaperones (two classes)
  • Participant ages/grade levels: 10-years old or 5th grade
  • Days of Week: Wednesdays or Tuesdays
  • Tours begin by 10 a.m.
  • Tour length: About 90 minutes
  • Sack lunches may be brought to use in park area after tour
  • Scheduled a minimum of three weeks in advance
  • Requesting schools or organizations should be in the LADWP service area, City of Los Angeles, Owens Valley or in nearby Santa Clarita
Power Plant Tour

Power Plant 1

This tour includes a full walk-through of LADWP’s Power Plant One, the city’s first hydro-electric power plant to generate electricity for LADWP customers. Have lunch inside the historic Mess Hall where the original plant operators once sat and visit the control room where the original generating turbines are still operating today.

This extensive tour gives you the closest look into the water purifying process from the Cascades all the way to the Los Angeles Reservoir. Join us as we walk you through the treatment process of a water molecule before it reaches your faucet.

Discovery Cube L.A.

Come to the Cube or let the Cube come to you! LADWP sponsors tours to Discovery Cube L.A. as well as on-campus presentations for elementary and middle school students within the LADWP service area. Schools may be eligible for full transportation funding!
