Project Background
The Barren Ridge – Haskell Line 1 (BAR-HSK L1) Upgrade Project is an important part of LADWP’s $4.5 billion Power Infrastructure Plan to accelerate the pace of replacing aging infrastructure. This critical upgrade will provide increased transmission capacity of clean, renewable energy between the Barren Ridge and Haskell Canyon Switching Stations and improve resiliency. The project aligns with such mandates as Senate Bill 100 and contributes toward achieving LA’s own goal of achieving 100% clean energy. This project is the final component of the Barren Ridge Renewable Transmission Project, approved in 2012, to access clean, renewable energy resources in the Tehachapi Mountain and Mojave Desert areas of Southern California.
Project Description
Crews will replace 51 miles of existing transmission line and ground wire, 243 existing transmission towers, and will add one additional tower. The project site begins 2 miles north of Haskell Canyon Switching Station, which is north of Santa Clarita, and extends through LADWP’s transmission line right-of-way property in Los Angeles and Kern Counties to Barren Ridge Switching Station, just north of California City. Please see the map for the overall location of this project.
Starting in December, 2023, crews will first clear vegetation, install erosion control devices, and perform grading as necessary. In February, 2024, crews will remove the existing wire, structures, and foundations. After removing the existing infrastructure, crews will install new foundations, towers, and wire. During construction, the transmission line will be out of service and power will be rerouted through other lines for the duration of the construction project.
